Is this word new to you too?
To groak (verb) means to stare longingly at a person who is eating in hopes of being invited to join in/them.
Hmm. Someone starving? Of course. A child? Certainly. A pet? Perhaps...
But what if it's fries?! I have lots of thoughts:
- *gives the stink-eye*
- Back off there, bud.
- Get your own fries.
- No.
- Why didn't you order fries?
- Look, I'll order more.
- Just a few.
- Okay that's enough.
- *silent seething*
- Groak off!

It's new to me! But I can relate ... my taller half gobbles his food down and finishes off a huge plateful, say in a restaurant, before I'm half finished mine, and then unless we're at a smorgasbord where he can go back for seconds, I get ready to stab his hand with my fork if need be. Often he ends up finishing my meal anyway, but lately since he eschews fries (for his health), they are safe.
I'm afraid I'm a party pooper here. I don't like fried foods. :)
I've never heard of groaking but we do use the other sayings here.
I'd never heard of groak, but I have heard of grok: understand (something) intuitively or by empathy. But all I got at first was that there is not a chatbot called Grok. As for groak, Google is refusing to recognize the word, but I like it fine. Don't we all long for fries? However, I haven't been to a chip truck this summer for I have been minding my poundage. I recently had some as part of a takeout from Mary Brown's, however. I ordered a chicken sandwich. Has MB made it out your way yet? I think it's slowly moving westward and is just really getting here into Eastern Ontario from points east.
I should have added "stabs hand" to my list, lol.
*stares longingly at your resolve and willpower*
Haha. This implies expletives. Well done.
I've never heard of groaking. I hardly ever eat them, they are to thick and kinda soggy here, the worst I ever had so I do without.
BAD FRIES?! So sorry to hear this, sir.
I haven't seen MB in Alberta yet, so I look forward to that, sir. Coincidentally, while visiting Scotland, my wife and I stopped at a coffee shop in North Berwick where we enjoyed amazing scones with cream and jam...the proprietor's name was Mary Brown. If MB is anything like that experience, it can't get here fast enough.
...but cutting back on fries is a good idea!

Fries. An owner told me that they change the oil once a week...
I’ve never heard of groaking either. We have ‘French fry’ tax in our house. Anyone who orders them understands that they will be sharing. It makes it rough when I’m eating with someone else who doesn’t understand…I feel like I should be able to have one or two of their fries, but I don’t want to ask.

I've never heard of 'groaking' but it's a great word. Naturally, being English and therefore reserved and uptight, I would never groak.
never heard of that word. Fries are not something I would normally order, so none of the above for me. Fries are one of those foods, where I like them done a certain way and MacDonald's is not the way at all, those are nasty!!
Amen, brother. I have been both the groaker and the groakee.
Oh the official term in Groaking. Huh. I've been calling it Ricking.
Never heard of that word.
My adorable dog does that every time I eat. He stares and stares, willing me to share. His stare is very powerful and sometimes I do share.
