As my oldest granddaughter once said, "Happy New Day, Pops." It is indeed. The saskatoons are ripening— my favourite sign of Canadian summer. Happy Canada Day, friends.
Science says even looking at trees boosts your mental health. What's your favourite tree? Or berry?
Every tree is great, as far as I'm concerned. And yes, saskatoons! They will be available at the local farmers market about the 3rd week in July. I have it marked in my daytimer to go buy some then and pig out until they're gone for another year.
ReplyDeleteSo delicious.
DeleteHappy Canada Day!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite tree is a familiar one to my Canadian friends -- the maple tree! Majestic when full in the summer and ablaze with color in the fall.
They are indeed beautiful, and very special to this Canadian; however, they don't grow abundantly in my vegetation zone, sigh.
DeleteSpeaking of trees, I see many silk lilac trees as we walk about. For whatever reason ours, out front, seems on its last legs (branches?), and the one out back has already bit the dust although it is making a comeback in bush form.
ReplyDeleteThey are usually so hardy.
DeleteI am a blueberry/raspberry person but I also think loganberries (Swedish) are fabulous. My favourite tree is the horse chestnut at the bottom of our garden, but I also think banyan trees are magical.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it wonderful when your favourite tree is in your yard? Love blueberries and raspberries too...would love to try loganberries.
DeleteI had to look up the word saskatoon. I had only heard it in relation to the city.
ReplyDeleteThey apparently grown in the northwestern US as well? But mostly in Canada. They were a staple for various North American Indigenous peoples and for new European settlers, they helped prevent scurvy. The city of Saskatoon is named after them.
DeleteThere are 3 mature burr oaks in our yard that give shade and a place for a shade garden. Call me crazy, but they and I have a special friendship.
ReplyDeleteWholly sane, and relatable.
DeleteWhat do they taste like in comparison to blueberries?
ReplyDeletePick just one tree? Impossible. But willows are nice.
Oh.try clicking my name...
Less sweet than blueberries, typically smaller, and mildly nutty too.
DeleteWHAT?!!!!! *claps*
Codex: Probably your fault. ;)
DeleteHappy Canada Day
...ours has fruited and the bird are having a feast. Here's to your mental health and a Happy Canada Day. 🇨🇦
ReplyDeleteYours too.
DeleteI love trees! Happy Canada Day!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite tree is the huge mature locust in front of my son's house, where the kids hung an old tire and had so much fun swinging through the air. Favourite berry? Strawberries of course, my dad grew them for a living.
ReplyDeleteI love all trees, but some are more beautiful than others. I love poplars, larches, maples, and oak trees.
ReplyDeleteFavourite tree.....hmmm, probably a Japanese maple, I like how they change colours in Autumn.
ReplyDeleteSaskatoon berries! I had to look this up. I spent a happy few days in Saskatoon in 2018. I assume the city got its name from the tree? I am fond of European beech trees and also the common lime tree. The scent of the blossom is heavenly and in Switzerland we dry this to make a herbal tea. Also heavenly.
ReplyDeleteWe are fortunate to have two Saskatoon trees in our yard (though we also call them June berries). Just picked a bushel full last week!
ReplyDeleteI have a particular fondness for Tamarack Trees and most people Hate them but they grow so enormous and are one of the Ancient ones if left alone to just Be Ancient and Magnificent. But, ah, Berries, they're all my Favorite, tho' a nice Lingonberry Crepe is favored... if I'm gonna choose a Berry Breakfast option.
