Sometimes

The Phantom Wagon by Salvador Dali
Sometimes a book grips me. By the throat. While I'm sleeping.

I'm reading Blood Meridian by Pulitzer prize winner Cormac McCarthy. There are scenes in this book that I can't get out of my head, and I wish I could. But that's only because they're terrifying. A bloody wedding veil. An broken ailing horse shaking its head, kept alive for who knows what heinous motive. Thinking about these scenes again, I feel the need to look over my shoulder at that desert of darkness behind us all, the one we only wish were empty.

I might not sleep much tonight but I can't stop.

And this, this is why I want to be a writer...

Takes a great writer to make that happen.....

I might seek out that one myself.

After I read terrifying passages I close the book, place a cross on it, and back away from the book slowly. But it pulls me back until I'm done and can't sleep with the lights off for months.

Cormac is sooooo goooooood. One of my favorites but I do have to wait months between reading his books or else my soul and outlook for humanity would be as dark as The Road.
(And I call him by his first name because we're close like that.)

I hate images of pain and suffering that sear themselves into my brain. I'm getting too old for it.

Ditto all the comments. The Road haunts years after reading.

I haven't read "Blood Meridian" but I think I'd like it.
I've read "The Road," though. Not terribly upbeat. But, it was very good, in an "end of the world" kind of way.

His writing is so direct. No fancy showing off. Love it.

Strange coincidence, someone recommended it to me a few days ago and I'm waiting for my copy. *gulp*

Oh yuck--that's what "The Road" did to me. I was HORRIFIED by that book, but couldn't put it down. I'll never read it again.

I love Cormac McCarthy. Have you read Child of God? Chilly.

I really *want* to read a Cormac McCarthy book, but I'm scared.
