Wordfuse (St. Patrick's Day Edition)

fortunot (noun, adjective): fortunate + not
As the phrase states, "luck of the Irish." Well historically the Irish people were actually not so lucky: invasion, exploitation, starvation, and weren't most of those who died on the Titanic of Irish heritage? Whoa. Fortunotsomuch. Thus perhaps the phrase is intended to be ironic. No matter how one interprets it, despite a history of fortunots, the Irish certainly are survivors. And they throw a good party too.

For every wound, a balm.
For every sorrow, cheer.
For every storm, a calm.
For every thirst, a beer.

There is an Irish proverb - "Ólann an cat ciúin bainne leis."

Translation: "The quiet cat also drinks milk."

Hear! Hear! To all of us Irish. Yeah, our ancestors haven't really been super lucky have they? It's turning around though dbs, I can feel it. :) Meh, even if it doesn't, we'll always have corned beef and cabbage.

Beannacht lá fhéile Pádraig everybody. Actually Ireland is in a bad way again. But this time it isn't the fault of the English. :-)

Greed of politicians and developers is what is has caused the current financial crisis that sees Ireland on the verge of bankruptcy. The Celtic tiger has crawled away to lick it's wounds.

that last little poem made me giggle
TRUE that....on the fortu-not thing
Maybe that's why they drank so much beer on St. Paddy's day....blot it all out somehow
wow....some cultures and events in history are amazing what they endure and overcome
p.s. HISTORY is my favorite thing

DB Stewart said...

@baygirl It's a good cheer isn't it?
@wendy I love history too. And I am amazed at what people have endured.

I was thinking the Irish are some of the unluckiest people in history. Fortunot indeed. But you're right about the party spirit. Maybe that's the fortune. The ability to party when all you've eaten are rotten potatoes and even that not so much.
